Analytical Engineering, Inc. Environmental Statement

Since the inception of the company, AEI has taken its environmental responsibility very seriously. Simply stated, AEI strives to conduct its operations whilst imposing the smallest possible environmental footprint. Moreover, AEI seeks every available avenue to not only minimize its impact on the earth’s biosphere, but to also create usable energy that is provided to the electric utility grid for other users. This systemic utilization of fossil resources allows for AEI to conduct its research and services for other customers while effectively maintaining a net zero carbon footprint. And further, AEI and its employees maintain some 72 acres of industrial property on the south side of Columbus, Indiana. All grounds that are not roads and buildings are maintained to the highest order with rolling, groomed pasture, manicured lawns, a wetland estuary, 10 acre fruit tree orchard, employee vegetable gardens, berry farm, and honey bees.

At AEI, we believe that the passion we bring to our work is reflected in our connection to nature and the environment. Beyond our technical innovations, we are proud to cultivate a variety of outdoor hobbies that not only enrich our surroundings but also contribute to sustainability and community engagement.

Bee Farm
Our bee farm, home to over 30 thriving hives, is a cornerstone of our outdoor endeavors. These industrious pollinators play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our local ecosystem. The honey produced is not only a testament to the hard work of our bees but also a sweet reminder of the importance of preserving natural habitats. Our employees actively manage and care for our bees, ensuring they have the resources they need to flourish.

Sunflower Field
Each year, we plant a vast sunflower field that brightens our landscape with its vibrant blooms. This field not only adds beauty to our surroundings but also serves as an important habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The sunflowers are a symbol of growth and renewal, reflecting our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Orchard
Our orchard is a diverse and bountiful space, with over 200 trees bearing a variety of fruits. We grow apples, cherries, pears, peaches, and plums, offering a seasonal bounty that is enjoyed by our team and local wildlife alike.

Vegetable Garden
Our vegetable garden is planted annually and is a space where we grow a variety of fresh produce. From tomatoes and peppers to lettuce and carrots, our garden is a source of pride and a demonstration of our commitment to healthy living. The produce from our garden is used in our kitchens and shared with our team, reinforcing the connection between the land and our daily lives.

We also cultivate blackberry bushes that produce delicious berries each season. These bushes are a favorite among our staff and a source of fresh, locally-grown produce. The blackberries are often shared within our community in forms of breakfasts or desserts.

At AEI, these outdoor hobbies are more than just a pastime; they are an integral part of our identity. They reflect our respect for nature, our dedication to sustainability, and our belief in the importance of giving back to the community. We take pride in nurturing these spaces and look forward to continuing our work both in the facilities and in the great outdoors.

Net Negative Carbon Footprint

The AEI facility on Technology Boulevard boasts a net negative carbon footprint. This is accomplished by utilizing its waste heat from engine research to heat the building in the winter. Further, mechanical energy that is derived from engine work is captured in the form of electrical energy that is carefully inverted to 60 hertz power. This energy is used to power the facility and the excess is exported to the utility grid. This facility exports power onto the grid where it is sold by Duke Energy to its customers in Columbus and surrounding communities.

To AEI’s knowledge, our company is the only private, non utility, continuous exporter of electrical power to the grid in the Midwestern USA. Exported power quality complies with IEEE 519 which is effectively perfect quality. Through a cooperative agreement between AEI and Duke Energy, waste energy from AEI is distributed to homes and businesses in the area. We at AEI are very proud to have this ability and are thankful to Duke Energy for their direct contribution to zero carbon energy distribution. Excess water that is used to provide cooling and other functions is pumped to a location behind AEI. This location is consequently maintained year around as a wetland. Comprising approximately one acre, this is home to a flourishing crop of cattails and moss that provide protection, food and nesting for redwing black birds, mockingbirds, robins, ducks and a host of other songbirds and migratory birds.
